A ten-year-surrender fixed indexed annuity from an A-rated carrier — the long-surrender flagship of American Equity's AssetShield line — built for accumulation across a broad menu of cap, participation, trigger and monthly-sum strategies on roughly nine indexes, with no income rider and no premium bonus.

Best fit

Buyers committed to a full ten-year deferral who want index-linked accumulation with the longest-term filing in the AssetShield line, value a broad strategy menu spanning recognizable benchmark caps and proprietary volatility-controlled participation strategies, and do not need a guaranteed lifetime-income rider built into the contract.

Product analyst notes

How to think about this contract

Why it can stand out

  • Carrier financial-strength is rated by more than one independent agency (A.M. Best and S&P), so the strength view is not a single-source read.
  • Index menu is unusually broad — buyers get recognizable benchmark exposure (S&P 500, Nasdaq-100, Dow Jones Industrial Average) alongside a set of carrier and volatility-controlled indexes (NYSE Premier, Nasdaq Premier, BNP Paribas Patriot Technology, BlackRock Adaptive US Equity, S&P 500 Advantage VT TCA) so a buyer can choose between like-for-like cap comparison and higher-participation alternatives.
  • Multiple crediting mechanics are offered on the same chassis — annual point-to-point caps, participation-rate strategies, fixed-trigger strategies, and a fixed-account option — so the buyer can mix exposure across crediting designs rather than being locked into a single style.
  • Free-withdrawal allowance and the full ten-year surrender ladder are visible on this page, so the schedule of penalty-free liquidity is not gated behind a sales brochure.

What to confirm

  • This is the long-surrender flagship of the AssetShield line (5, 7, 9, 10). The ten-year commitment with a front-loaded surrender charge is significantly heavier than the shorter-term siblings — buyers who do not need the full ten-year deferral should compare AssetShield 5, 7, or 9 explicitly before locking in the longest term, because the longer commitment is the cost paid for the higher caps and participation rates on this contract.
  • This contract is not a guaranteed-lifetime-withdrawal product. The page explicitly states a lifetime-income rider is not available — the only rider-style enhancements on this contract are crediting bumps (Performance Rate Rider) and surrender-charge waivers (nursing home, terminal illness). Do not compare its payout side-by-side with a GLWB-rider income FIA.
  • The Performance Rate Rider that quotes the higher caps and participation rates on this contract is a fee-bearing enhancement (a strategy-level charge), not a free upgrade — caps quoted under that rider are not directly comparable to a no-fee cap on another carrier's product.
  • Several of the listed indexes (BNP Paribas Patriot Technology, BlackRock Adaptive US Equity, S&P 500 Advantage VT TCA, S&P 500 Dividend Aristocrats with daily risk control) are volatility-controlled or proprietary. Participation rates on these strategies look very high in absolute terms but are not directly comparable to an uncontrolled S&P 500 cap — evaluate each strategy on its own merits. There is also no premium bonus on this contract to offset the long surrender term, and the guaranteed-minimum cap and fixed-account floors are very low — caps and participation rates can reset down toward those floors over the ten-year surrender term, and the buyer carries that renewal risk for the full term.

Not ideal for

Buyers who need short-surrender liquidity, want a contractually guaranteed GLWB-rider withdrawal rate, expect a premium bonus to offset a long surrender term, or want a death-benefit roll-up beyond the standard death benefit — none of those are what this contract is built to deliver. Buyers who do not need the full ten-year commitment should look at AssetShield 5, 7, or 9 instead.

Current CANNEX information identifies this product as tax-deferred accumulation. Compare cap, participation rate, fees, liquidity, and surrender terms; use a separate payout-focused contract when guaranteed payout mechanics are required.

Common questions about American Equity AssetShield 10

Can I lose money in American Equity AssetShield 10?

A negative index return by itself does not reduce the contract's account value: American Equity AssetShield 10 credits 0% — the floor — for that indexed period. The account value can still decrease from applicable rider fees, Performance Rate Rider or other strategy charges, administrative charges, withdrawals, surrender charges, or other contract-specific deductions. In years with no credited interest, those deductions can reduce the account value. Up to 10% of your value can be withdrawn each year without a charge; withdrawals above the penalty-free amount during the surrender period can incur a surrender charge.

When can I access my money without a surrender charge?

Up to 10% of your account value each year is penalty-free. The scheduled surrender charges run 10 years; after that the surrender-charge schedule ends. Bonus vesting, market value adjustments when applicable, and other contract rules can still affect the amount available. The Liquidity tab of the analyzer shows the year-by-year surrender charge.

How do American Equity AssetShield 10's crediting strategies compare?

Use "Compare against" in the analyzer to overlay another current American Equity AssetShield 10 strategy on the same premium, age, years, and hypothetical index path. The control labels the strategy type, rate, index, and context so caps, participation rates, triggers, spreads, and fixed-account choices are not treated as interchangeable.

Crediting design

How the interest-crediting choices are framed

American Equity AssetShield 10 currently shows 44 indexed or fixed crediting options, including S&P 500 Index, with 32 volatility-controlled index options grouped separately. These choices matter because caps, participation rates, fixed accounts, spreads, renewal terms, and fee-bearing rider variants are different mechanics and should not be ranked as one simple rate list.

  • S&P 500 Index: 9.25% annual cap
  • S&P 500 Index: 11.75% annual cap, Performance Rate Rider, 1.5% annual strategy fee
  • S&P 500 Index: 2% monthly point-to-point cap
  • S&P 500 Index: 3.2% monthly point-to-point cap, Performance Rate Rider, 1.5% annual strategy fee

Liquidity terms

Why access rules deserve as much attention as rates

A fixed indexed annuity can preserve more control than an income-only contract, but access is still governed by the surrender schedule, free-withdrawal terms, and waiver language. Those details are where many product comparisons become more meaningful than a simple rate list.

  • 10%/yr free withdrawal
  • 10 surrender years
  • Nursing home waiver
  • Terminal illness waiver

Verification note

Use carrier materials as term evidence, then confirm the current version

Carrier materials such as American Equity AssetShield 10 Sales Brochure.pdf help explain the contract language behind the data on this page; the latest document activity we see is Apr 8, 2026. For the current brochure, rate sheet, or specimen contract, confirm the state-specific version with the carrier or a licensed financial professional.

  • Rates and rider terms can vary by state and issue age
  • Carrier guarantees depend on claims-paying ability
  • Current contract forms should be confirmed before purchase
