Product analyst notes

How to think about this contract

Why it can stand out

  • Crediting menu is unusually broad — recognizable benchmark indexes (S&P 500, Nasdaq-100, Dow Jones Industrial Average) appear alongside proprietary volatility-controlled options, and the strategy types span annual point-to-point caps, participation rates, trigger (declared-rate) strategies, and two-year point-to-point — giving the buyer real choice between like-for-like cap comparison and higher-participation alternatives.
  • Trigger strategies pay a fixed declared rate whenever the underlying index finishes the term flat or up, which is a structurally different payoff profile from a cap and can be useful in sideways markets — many FIAs do not offer one at all.
  • Carrier financial-strength is rated by more than one agency (A.M. Best and S&P both rate the carrier), so the strength view is not a single-source read.
  • Free-withdrawal allowance and the full surrender ladder are visible on this page, so the schedule of penalty-free liquidity is not gated behind a sales brochure.

What to confirm

  • This contract is NOT a lifetime-income product. There is no GLWB income rider and no Protected Income Value mechanism — the only riders are surrender-charge waivers (nursing home, terminal illness, bail-out). Do not compare its lifetime payout side-by-side with a rider-led income FIA or a PIV chassis.
  • A subset of strategies (cap and participation versions on several indexes) is enhanced via a Performance Rate Rider that imposes an allocation charge. The higher caps and higher participation rates those strategies quote are fee-bearing — they are not directly comparable to a base cap on the same index, and the charge erodes the headline number over time.
  • Surrender term runs the full nine years with a steep front-loaded charge — a meaningful liquidity commitment. Buyers who may need access to principal inside the surrender window should weigh the full surrender ladder, not just the free-withdrawal allowance.
  • Several of the indexes on the menu (e.g. BNP Paribas Patriot Technology, BlackRock Adaptive US Equity 15%) are proprietary and volatility-controlled. Participation rates on these strategies look high in absolute terms but are not directly comparable to an S&P 500 cap — evaluate each strategy on its own merits.

Not ideal for

Buyers who need a guaranteed lifetime withdrawal rate from a GLWB rider, built-in income through a Protected Income Value mechanism, a shorter surrender commitment, or a death-benefit roll-up beyond the standard death-benefit terms — none of those are what this contract is built to deliver.

Common questions about American Equity AssetShield 9

Can I lose money in American Equity AssetShield 9?

A negative index return by itself does not reduce the contract's account value: American Equity AssetShield 9 credits 0% — the floor — for that indexed period. The account value can still decrease from applicable rider fees, Performance Rate Rider or other strategy charges, administrative charges, withdrawals, surrender charges, or other contract-specific deductions. In years with no credited interest, those deductions can reduce the account value. Up to 10% of your value can be withdrawn each year without a charge; withdrawals above the penalty-free amount during the surrender period can incur a surrender charge.

When can I access my money without a surrender charge?

Up to 10% of your account value each year is penalty-free. The scheduled surrender charges run 9 years; after that the surrender-charge schedule ends. Bonus vesting, market value adjustments when applicable, and other contract rules can still affect the amount available. The Liquidity tab of the analyzer shows the year-by-year surrender charge.

How do American Equity AssetShield 9's crediting strategies compare?

Use "Compare against" in the analyzer to overlay another current American Equity AssetShield 9 strategy on the same premium, age, years, and hypothetical index path. The control labels the strategy type, rate, index, and context so caps, participation rates, triggers, spreads, and fixed-account choices are not treated as interchangeable.

Crediting design

How the interest-crediting choices are framed

American Equity AssetShield 9 currently shows 44 indexed or fixed crediting options, including S&P 500 Index, with 32 volatility-controlled index options grouped separately. These choices matter because caps, participation rates, fixed accounts, spreads, renewal terms, and fee-bearing rider variants are different mechanics and should not be ranked as one simple rate list.

  • S&P 500 Index: 9.25% annual cap
  • S&P 500 Index: 2% monthly point-to-point cap
  • S&P 500 Index: 11.75% annual cap, Performance Rate Rider, 1.5% annual strategy fee
  • S&P 500 Index: 3.2% monthly point-to-point cap, Performance Rate Rider, 1.5% annual strategy fee

Liquidity terms

Why access rules deserve as much attention as rates

A fixed indexed annuity can preserve more control than an income-only contract, but access is still governed by the surrender schedule, free-withdrawal terms, and waiver language. Those details are where many product comparisons become more meaningful than a simple rate list.

  • 10%/yr free withdrawal
  • 9 surrender years
  • Nursing home waiver
  • Terminal illness waiver

Verification note

Use carrier materials as term evidence, then confirm the current version

Carrier materials such as American Equity AssetShield 9 Sales Brochure - CA-2.pdf and American Equity AssetShield 9 Sales Brochure - CA.pdf help explain the contract language behind the data on this page; the latest document activity we see is Apr 8, 2026. For the current brochure, rate sheet, or specimen contract, confirm the state-specific version with the carrier or a licensed financial professional.

  • Rates and rider terms can vary by state and issue age
  • Carrier guarantees depend on claims-paying ability
  • Current contract forms should be confirmed before purchase
