S&P 500 annual cap rate

4.6% cap on S&P 500

A seven-year-surrender fixed indexed annuity from an A-rated Corebridge subsidiary in the Power Protector family, with an S&P 500 annual cap, an S&P 500 declared-rate trigger, and one- and two-year participation-rate options on three proprietary volatility-controlled indexes; the 'Plus Income' filing name signals an income-rider version, but no GLWB rider terms are currently published for this contract.

Product analyst notes

How to think about this contract

Why it can stand out

  • Same seven-year surrender chassis as the base Power 7 Protector, with a crediting menu that pairs a recognizable S&P 500 annual point-to-point cap and an S&P 500 declared-rate (trigger) strategy that credits a fixed amount whenever the index return is zero or positive — two ways to play the same benchmark in one contract.
  • Strategy lineup includes one-year and two-year participation-rate options on three proprietary volatility-controlled indexes (AQR DynamiQ Allocation, ML Strategic Balanced, PIMCO Global Optima), each available in a base and an 'Enhanced Participation Rate' variant, so buyers willing to accept a strategy charge can lift participation meaningfully above the no-fee version.
  • Free-withdrawal allowance and the full seven-year surrender ladder are visible on this page rather than gated behind a brochure, and the contract includes nursing-home, terminal-illness, and RMD surrender-charge waivers.
  • Carrier financial-strength is rated by three independent agencies (A.M. Best, S&P, and Moody's), so the strength view is triangulated rather than single-source.

What to confirm

  • The 'Plus Income' name is the carrier's filing label for what is typically the income-rider version of the Power Protector contract, but the live data currently shows no published income-rider terms — no withdrawal rate, rider fee, or income-base growth. Treat any lifetime-income claim as unconfirmed: ask the carrier or issuing advisor whether a Lifetime Income Plus Flex (or equivalent) Guaranteed Living Benefit Rider is currently available and at what cost before comparing it with rider-led income FIAs.
  • This contract has the same fixed account, S&P 500 cap, proprietary-index participation menu, and seven-year surrender ladder as the base Power 7 Protector. If a buyer doesn't want the income rider and its fee, the base Power 7 Protector is the cleaner choice without paying for an income guarantee that won't be used.
  • Several of the highest-participation strategies are labeled 'Enhanced Participation Rate' and carry an explicit annual strategy charge that comes out of the credit — the participation rate is the gross rate, not the net rate after the charge. The headline cap on this page is drawn from the un-enhanced S&P 500 cap; weigh the enhanced strategies separately, factoring in their fee.
  • Filed in 49 jurisdictions (the live feed shows 48 states plus the District of Columbia, with New York excluded). Confirm state availability for the contract owner's residence before applying — and note that Corebridge also issues Power 10 Protector Plus Income with a ten-year surrender period for buyers willing to accept a longer commitment.

Not ideal for

Buyers who need a contractually published GLWB withdrawal rate to compare lifetime income side-by-side with rider-led FIAs (the live feed does not currently show those terms), want a Protected Income Value built-in income design, need shorter-than-seven-year liquidity, prefer the ten-year Power 10 Protector Plus Income version, or want a plain MYGA-style declared rate without index-linked crediting strategies.

Common questions about Power 7 Protector Plus Income

Can I lose money in Power 7 Protector Plus Income?

A negative index return by itself does not reduce the contract's account value: Power 7 Protector Plus Income credits 0% — the floor — for that indexed period. The account value can still decrease from applicable rider fees, Performance Rate Rider or other strategy charges, administrative charges, withdrawals, surrender charges, or other contract-specific deductions. In years with no credited interest, those deductions can reduce the account value. Up to 10% of your value can be withdrawn each year without a charge; withdrawals above the penalty-free amount during the surrender period can incur a surrender charge.

Is the Lifetime Income Choice - Max Income income rider worth the 1.1% fee?

It depends on whether you will use the guaranteed income. If you are accumulating only, you can skip it. If you want guaranteed lifetime income later, the 9% roll-up and 7.2% withdrawal rate can make it worthwhile — model it in the Income tab of the analyzer above.

When can I access my money without a surrender charge?

Up to 10% of your account value each year is penalty-free. The scheduled surrender charges run 7 years; after that the surrender-charge schedule ends. Bonus vesting, market value adjustments when applicable, and other contract rules can still affect the amount available. The Liquidity tab of the analyzer shows the year-by-year surrender charge.

How do Power 7 Protector Plus Income's crediting strategies compare?

Use "Compare against" in the analyzer to overlay another current Power 7 Protector Plus Income strategy on the same premium, age, years, and hypothetical index path. The control labels the strategy type, rate, index, and context so caps, participation rates, triggers, spreads, and fixed-account choices are not treated as interchangeable.

Crediting design

How the interest-crediting choices are framed

Power 7 Protector Plus Income currently shows 33 distinct indexed or fixed crediting choices across 34 displayed rate entries, including S&P 500 Index, with 24 volatility-controlled index options grouped separately. These choices matter because caps, participation rates, fixed accounts, spreads, renewal terms, and fee-bearing rider variants are different mechanics and should not be ranked as one simple rate list.

  • S&P 500 Index: 4.6% annual cap
  • S&P 500 Index: 3.6% annual cap
  • S&P 500 Index: 100% annual participation rate
  • S&P 500 Index: 13% annual participation rate

Income rider language

What to look for before treating the rider as income

Lifetime Income Choice - Max Income is the main income rider listed for this product. Rider terms can affect the tradeoff between future lifetime withdrawals, contract value, beneficiary value, and cost, so the exact state version and rider election should be confirmed before comparing it to annuitization or income-only contracts.

  • 7.2% withdrawal rate
  • 1.1% rider fee
  • 10 deferral years

Liquidity terms

Why access rules deserve as much attention as rates

A fixed indexed annuity can preserve more control than an income-only contract, but access is still governed by the surrender schedule, free-withdrawal terms, and waiver language. Those details are where many product comparisons become more meaningful than a simple rate list.

  • 10%/yr free withdrawal
  • 7 surrender years
  • Nursing home waiver
  • RMD waiver
  • Terminal illness waiver

Verification note

Use carrier materials as term evidence, then confirm the current version

Carrier materials such as Corebridge Financial (American General Life Insurance Company) – Power 7 Protector – Brochure (I6110CON : 03-24).pdf.pdf help explain the contract language behind the data on this page; the latest document activity we see is Apr 24, 2026. For the current brochure, rate sheet, or specimen contract, confirm the state-specific version with the carrier or a licensed financial professional.

  • Rates and rider terms can vary by state and issue age
  • Carrier guarantees depend on claims-paying ability
  • Current contract forms should be confirmed before purchase
