S&P 500 cap rate (built-in income chassis)

5.25% cap on S&P 500

A long-surrender, A+ rated fixed indexed annuity marketed for built-in lifetime income, built around a recognizable S&P 500 cap plus a broad menu of proprietary participation-rate strategies — the built-in income mechanism is structural to the contract and not shown as a separately rated rider in the data on this page.

Best fit

Buyers committing to a ten-year deferral who want recognizable S&P 500 cap exposure alongside a wide menu of proprietary participation-rate strategies from a large A+ rated carrier, and who plan to evaluate the built-in income story through Athene's own illustration of the Income Base rather than a rider rate on this page.

How to think about this contract

Why it can stand out

  • Crediting menu includes a recognizable S&P 500 annual point-to-point cap, so a buyer gets at least one like-for-like comparison point against other FIAs on this site rather than only proprietary participation-rate strategies.
  • Index lineup is broad: an S&P 500 cap, an S&P 500 decrement-index participation strategy, the BNP Paribas Multi Asset Diversified 5 Index, the Nasdaq FC Index, the AI Powered US Equity Index, the AI Powered Global Opportunities Index, and the UBS Innovative Balanced Index all appear on this contract — a buyer has multiple volatility-controlled options to evaluate against the S&P cap.
  • Both a 1-year and a 2-year point-to-point option are offered on most indexes, so a buyer can mix annual crediting with a longer crediting term inside one allocation.
  • Athene Annuity and Life Company is A+ rated by A.M. Best, Fitch, and Standard & Poor's, with an A1 from Moody's — the carrier-strength view on this page is from four recognized agencies.
  • Free-withdrawal allowance, the full ten-year surrender ladder, the market-value-adjustment flag, the nursing-home waiver, and the terminal-illness waiver are visible directly on this page rather than gated behind a sales brochure.

What to confirm

  • This product is marketed by Athene as a built-in-income contract, but no optional income rider with a published lifetime withdrawal rate is shown in the rate feed. The built-in income mechanism — the Income Base, any premium bonus, and any income multiplier — is structural to the contract and is not shown in the data on this page. Do not infer a lifetime payout rate from anything visible here; confirm the income benefit numbers directly with Athene's illustration before comparing to a rider-led product.
  • Most of the index options are proprietary volatility-controlled excess-shows indexes. Their participation rates can look high in absolute terms — several are above one-to-one parity — but are not directly comparable to an S&P 500 cap, and several have shorter live-track histories than the S&P 500 itself; evaluate each on its own merits.
  • The 2-year point-to-point S&P 500 cap is higher than the 1-year cap, but the spec headlines the annual cap because a 2-year cap is a multi-year crediting term and is not directly comparable to single-year caps used on competing contracts. Read the calculation-frequency column on the strategy table before comparing any 2-year number to a 1-year cap elsewhere.
  • Surrender lockup runs ten years (9/9/8/7/6/5/4/3/2/1) with a market-value adjustment on amounts above the free-withdrawal allowance. This is a long-deferral commitment with interest-rate sensitivity on early exits — confirm with the carrier how the MVA is computed before any planned partial surrender.
  • The standard death benefit on this contract pays cash surrender value, not account value or a rolled-up income base — heirs receive what a buyer would receive on a non-penalty surrender, which can be materially lower than an account-value-based death benefit on a competing contract.

Not ideal for

Buyers who need a contractually guaranteed lifetime withdrawal rate from a published GLWB rider, want a plain MYGA-style declared rate, need short-surrender liquidity, or require an account-value-based death benefit — none of those are what this contract is built to deliver, and the Agility name should not be read as a guaranteed-payout-rate promise without confirming the Income Base numbers with the carrier.

Common questions about Athene Agility 10

Can I lose money in Athene Agility 10?

A negative index return by itself does not reduce the contract's account value: Athene Agility 10 credits 0% — the floor — for that indexed period. The account value can still decrease from applicable rider fees, Performance Rate Rider or other strategy charges, administrative charges, withdrawals, surrender charges, or other contract-specific deductions. In years with no credited interest, those deductions can reduce the account value. Up to 10% of your value can be withdrawn each year without a charge; withdrawals above the penalty-free amount during the surrender period can incur a surrender charge.

Is the Income Benefit Rider income rider worth the 0% fee?

It depends on whether you will use the guaranteed income. If you are accumulating only, you can skip it. If you want guaranteed lifetime income later, the 4% withdrawal rate can make it worthwhile — model it in the Income tab of the analyzer above.

When can I access my money without a surrender charge?

Up to 10% of your account value each year is penalty-free. The scheduled surrender charges run 10 years; after that the surrender-charge schedule ends. Bonus vesting, market value adjustments when applicable, and other contract rules can still affect the amount available. The Liquidity tab of the analyzer shows the year-by-year surrender charge.

How do Athene Agility 10's crediting strategies compare?

Use "Compare against" in the analyzer to overlay another current Athene Agility 10 strategy on the same premium, age, years, and hypothetical index path. The control labels the strategy type, rate, index, and context so caps, participation rates, triggers, spreads, and fixed-account choices are not treated as interchangeable.

Crediting design

How the interest-crediting choices are framed

Athene Agility 10 currently shows 15 distinct indexed or fixed crediting choices across 16 displayed rate entries, including S&P 500 Index and Fixed Account, with 12 volatility-controlled index options grouped separately. These choices matter because caps, participation rates, fixed accounts, spreads, renewal terms, and fee-bearing rider variants are different mechanics and should not be ranked as one simple rate list.

  • S&P 500 Index: 5.25% annual cap
  • S&P 500 Index: 10.75% 2-year cap
  • Fixed Account: 2.9% fixed account rate

Income rider language

What to look for before treating the rider as income

Income Benefit Rider is the main income rider listed for this product. Rider terms can affect the tradeoff between future lifetime withdrawals, contract value, beneficiary value, and cost, so the exact state version and rider election should be confirmed before comparing it to annuitization or income-only contracts.

  • 4% withdrawal rate
  • 0% rider fee
  • 10 deferral years

Liquidity terms

Why access rules deserve as much attention as rates

A fixed indexed annuity can preserve more control than an income-only contract, but access is still governed by the surrender schedule, free-withdrawal terms, and waiver language. Those details are where many product comparisons become more meaningful than a simple rate list.

  • 10%/yr free withdrawal
  • 10 surrender years
  • Nursing home waiver
  • Terminal illness waiver

Verification note

Use carrier materials as term evidence, then confirm the current version

Carrier materials such as Athene-Agility-Consumer-Brochure.pdf help explain the contract language behind the data on this page; the latest document activity we see is Apr 8, 2026. For the current brochure, rate sheet, or specimen contract, confirm the state-specific version with the carrier or a licensed financial professional.

  • Rates and rider terms can vary by state and issue age
  • Carrier guarantees depend on claims-paying ability
  • Current contract forms should be confirmed before purchase
