How crediting works: the participation rate keeps a share of positive index returns; a down index year credits 0% before the annual strategy fee; fees can reduce account value. A participation strategy tracks the index within its terms. What is a cap vs participation? →
Assumptions: illustrative — applies Athene Velocity's published participation rate (180% on MSCI MKT MediaStats Multi-Asset Index) to a calibrated proprietary/volatility-controlled hypothetical index path (~1.9%/yr average, including down years) with a 0% floor over 20 years; 2-year credits are applied only at completed term anniversaries. Net growth deducts the 0.95% annual strategy fee listed for this strategy. Not a projection, quote, or guarantee. Live CANNEX rates as of July 17, 2026.

Product analyst notes

How to think about this contract

Why it can stand out

  • Optional Athene Velocity Income Rider is a named GLWB with a published lifetime withdrawal rate that steps up by deferral length, so a buyer evaluating income can read the rider rate directly off this page rather than waiting on a carrier illustration.
  • GLWB is marked RMD-friendly, which matters for qualified retirement money where required minimum distributions would otherwise complicate a lifetime-withdrawal schedule.
  • Athene is A+ rated by A.M. Best, so the carrier strength view on this page is from a recognized agency at one of the higher rating bands in the FIA market.
  • Crediting menu spans seven distinct indexes — including the S&P 500 — so an accumulation-minded buyer can split allocations across a recognizable broad-market index and several proprietary volatility-controlled designs inside one contract.

What to confirm

  • Every index strategy on this contract is a participation-rate design on a 2-year calculation cycle — there is no annual point-to-point cap on the S&P 500 to ground a like-for-like accumulation comparison against shorter-cycle FIAs on this site.
  • Half of the strategies are 'Strategy Fee Included' variants that carry a published annual fee deducted regardless of index performance. The higher participation rate on a fee-bearing strategy is not directly comparable to the same index without the fee — read the fee column on the strategy table before reading the participation number.
  • Surrender lockup runs ten years and starts at a high first-year charge that steps down slowly. The GLWB rider only reaches its top published payout rate after a ten-year deferral, so an early-income buyer gives up both rate and liquidity.
  • The standard death benefit on this contract pays cash surrender value, not account value or a rolled-up income base — heirs receive what a buyer would receive on a non-penalty surrender, which can be materially lower than an account-value-based death benefit on a competing contract.

Not ideal for

Buyers who want a recognizable S&P 500 annual cap as the accumulation benchmark, need short-surrender liquidity, plan to turn on income immediately at full rate, want a plain MYGA-style declared rate without a rider, or require an account-value-based death benefit — none of those are what this contract is built to deliver.

Common questions about Athene Velocity

Can I lose money in Athene Velocity?

A negative index return by itself does not reduce the contract's account value: Athene Velocity credits 0% — the floor — for that indexed period. The account value can still decrease from applicable rider fees, Performance Rate Rider or other strategy charges, administrative charges, withdrawals, surrender charges, or other contract-specific deductions. In years with no credited interest, those deductions can reduce the account value. Up to 10% of your value can be withdrawn each year without a charge; withdrawals above the penalty-free amount during the surrender period can incur a surrender charge.

Is the Athene Velocity Income Rider income rider worth the 0% fee?

It depends on whether you will use the guaranteed income. If you are accumulating only, you can skip it. If you want guaranteed lifetime income later, the 3% withdrawal rate can make it worthwhile — model it in the Income tab of the analyzer above.

When can I access my money without a surrender charge?

Up to 10% of your account value each year is penalty-free. The scheduled surrender charges run 10 years; after that the surrender-charge schedule ends. Bonus vesting, market value adjustments when applicable, and other contract rules can still affect the amount available. The Liquidity tab of the analyzer shows the year-by-year surrender charge.

How do Athene Velocity's crediting strategies compare?

Use "Compare against" in the analyzer to overlay another current Athene Velocity strategy on the same premium, age, years, and hypothetical index path. The control labels the strategy type, rate, index, and context so caps, participation rates, triggers, spreads, and fixed-account choices are not treated as interchangeable.

Crediting design

How the interest-crediting choices are framed

Athene Velocity currently shows 14 indexed or fixed crediting options, including S&P 500 Index, with 12 volatility-controlled index options grouped separately. These choices matter because caps, participation rates, fixed accounts, spreads, renewal terms, and fee-bearing rider variants are different mechanics and should not be ranked as one simple rate list.

  • S&P 500 Index: 45% 2-year participation rate
  • S&P 500 Index: 58% 2-year participation rate, Fee-bearing option, 0.95% annual strategy fee

Income rider language

What to look for before treating the rider as income

Athene Velocity Income Rider is the main income rider listed for this product. Rider terms can affect the tradeoff between future lifetime withdrawals, contract value, beneficiary value, and cost, so the exact state version and rider election should be confirmed before comparing it to annuitization or income-only contracts.

  • 3% withdrawal rate
  • 0% rider fee
  • 10 deferral years

Liquidity terms

Why access rules deserve as much attention as rates

A fixed indexed annuity can preserve more control than an income-only contract, but access is still governed by the surrender schedule, free-withdrawal terms, and waiver language. Those details are where many product comparisons become more meaningful than a simple rate list.

  • 10%/yr free withdrawal
  • 10 surrender years
  • Nursing home waiver
  • RMD waiver
  • Terminal illness waiver

Verification note

Use carrier materials as term evidence, then confirm the current version

For the current brochure, rate sheet, or specimen contract, confirm the state-specific version with the carrier or a licensed financial professional.

  • Rates and rider terms can vary by state and issue age
  • Carrier guarantees depend on claims-paying ability
  • Current contract forms should be confirmed before purchase
