Assumptions: illustrative — applies New Heights Select 8's published spread rate (0.75% on Strategy A) to a calibrated proprietary/volatility-controlled hypothetical index path (~1.9%/yr average, including down years) with a 0% floor over 20 years; 2-year credits are applied only at completed term anniversaries. Product analyst notes

How to think about this contract

Why it can stand out

  • Premium bonus is credited at issue with an 8-year vesting schedule, so longer holders capture more of the bonus the longer they stay in the surrender period.
  • Free-withdrawal allowance is wider than the bands typical on most 8-year FIAs, which is meaningful penalty-free liquidity for a contract this long.
  • Carrier is rated by all three major agencies (A.M. Best A+, Moody's A1, S&P A+), so the strength view triangulates rather than resting on a single rating.
  • Built-in nursing-home, terminal-illness, and required-minimum-distribution surrender waivers — the most common life-event liquidity escape hatches are all in the base contract.

What to confirm

  • Crediting is spread-based on proprietary 'Strategy A' / 'Strategy B' configurations, not cap-rate point-to-point on a named index. That is structurally different from S&P 500 cap products and not directly comparable on a headline cap rate.
  • The contractually-allowed maximum spread is high, meaning the carrier has wide latitude to raise the spread at renewal, which can shrink net credits below what a buyer modeled at issue.
  • Death benefit is shows of Premium, not an account-value or rollup design — heirs get premium back rather than continued accumulation value, which is a step down from richer death-benefit options on comparable contracts.
  • The 8-year surrender schedule remains positive into the final year and carries an MVA — full liquidity beyond the free withdrawal is meaningfully constrained for most of the term.

Not ideal for

Buyers who want a straightforward S&P 500 annual point-to-point cap to compare against other FIAs, anyone who needs lifetime income from a built-in rider, or buyers who can't lock funds up for the full 8-year surrender period.

New Heights Select 8 review notes

Learn about the features, rates, and costs of Nationwide New Heights Select Fixed Indexed Annuity, a retirement product offering growth and protection

3.8/5Nationwide New Heights Select is best viewed as a feature-rich fixed indexed annuity for buyers who value Daily Accumulation Value tracking, optional lock-in, and rider-driven income planning. It is not the cleanest accumulation play: the index-crediting options rely on participation rates and spreads, and the contract asks buyers to accept a long surrender period. I would consider it for someone who wants the Nationwide chassis and optional income or death-benefit features, not for someone shopping purely for the highest simple index-crediting upside.Read review

CFA take

In my view, the Nationwide New Heights Select is one of the more feature-rich FIAs in the market, particularly for investors who value flexibility around income planning and active contract monitoring. The product differentiates itself through features like Daily Accumulation Value (DAV) tracking, optional lock-in of gains, and earnings capture on withdrawals — features that are not commonly available in traditional FIAs. That said, the product can feel somewhat complex, especially for investors who prefer simpler annuity structures. While the optional income riders are relatively strong, the rider costs are slightly above industry averages, and the S&P 500 participation terms are less competitive than what some peers currently offer. Additionally, most of the proprietary indices employ volatility-control mechanisms, which help stabilize returns but can also limit upside potential during strong bull markets. Overall, I would view Nationwide New Heights Select as a solid fit for retirees seeking a more interactive, feature-heavy FIA with strong income planning flexibility, rather than a straightforward accumulation-focused annuity.

Common questions about New Heights Select 8

Can I lose money in New Heights Select 8?

A negative index return by itself does not reduce the contract's account value: New Heights Select 8 credits 0% — the floor — for that indexed period. The account value can still decrease from applicable rider fees, Performance Rate Rider or other strategy charges, administrative charges, withdrawals, surrender charges, or other contract-specific deductions. In years with no credited interest, those deductions can reduce the account value. Up to 7% of your value can be withdrawn each year without a charge; withdrawals above the penalty-free amount during the surrender period can incur a surrender charge.

Is the High Point 365 Select income rider worth the 0.95% fee?

It depends on whether you will use the guaranteed income. If you are accumulating only, you can skip it. If you want guaranteed lifetime income later, the 1% roll-up and 4.98% withdrawal rate can make it worthwhile — model it in the Income tab of the analyzer above.

When can I access my money without a surrender charge?

Up to 7% of your account value each year is penalty-free. The scheduled surrender charges run 8 years; after that the surrender-charge schedule ends. Bonus vesting, market value adjustments when applicable, and other contract rules can still affect the amount available. The Liquidity tab of the analyzer shows the year-by-year surrender charge.

How do New Heights Select 8's crediting strategies compare?

Use "Compare against" in the analyzer to overlay another current New Heights Select 8 strategy on the same premium, age, years, and hypothetical index path. The control labels the strategy type, rate, index, and context so caps, participation rates, triggers, spreads, and fixed-account choices are not treated as interchangeable.

Crediting design

How the interest-crediting choices are framed

New Heights Select 8 currently shows 36 distinct indexed or fixed crediting choices across 40 displayed rate entries, including S&P 500 Index, with 32 volatility-controlled index options grouped separately. These choices matter because caps, participation rates, fixed accounts, spreads, renewal terms, and fee-bearing rider variants are different mechanics and should not be ranked as one simple rate list.

  • S&P 500 Index: 45% annual participation rate, Index Allocation — 100% allocation
  • S&P 500 Index: 30% annual participation rate, Index Allocation — 100% allocation
  • S&P 500 Index: 55% 2-year participation rate, Index Allocation — 100% allocation
  • S&P 500 Index: 35% 2-year participation rate, Index Allocation — 100% allocation

Income rider language

What to look for before treating the rider as income

High Point 365 Select is the main income rider listed for this product. Rider terms can affect the tradeoff between future lifetime withdrawals, contract value, beneficiary value, and cost, so the exact state version and rider election should be confirmed before comparing it to annuitization or income-only contracts.

  • 4.98% withdrawal rate
  • 0.95% rider fee
  • 10 deferral years

Liquidity terms

Why access rules deserve as much attention as rates

A fixed indexed annuity can preserve more control than an income-only contract, but access is still governed by the surrender schedule, free-withdrawal terms, and waiver language. Those details are where many product comparisons become more meaningful than a simple rate list.

  • 7%/yr free withdrawal
  • 8 surrender years
  • Nursing home waiver
  • RMD waiver
  • Terminal illness waiver
